Nadie sabe cuándo, ni quién, ni dónde, se descubrió el primer ictiosaurio, pues existen gran cantidad de restos en canteras de Suabia, Franconia, Inglaterra,...
... la descripción más antigua que se conoce... fue dada en 1669 por Edward Lluyd anticuario inglés, quien en su obra “Lithophylacii Britannici Ichnographia”, consideraba al Ictiosaurio como un gran pez petrificado, aunque con algunas connotaciones especiales...
... al evaporarse el agua del mar, habían llegado hasta las nubes algunos huevos de pez, que cayeron junto a la lluvia en tierra firme y, dentro de la arena, adquirieron la forma petrificada...
... en 1749, se descubre en Bad Boll (Suabia) el primer ictiosaurio completo... hallazgo realizado por un tal Mohr, licenciado en teología protestante y médico de Cöppingen...
... pensó que se trataba de un tiburón.
El “tiburón de Mohr” se instaló en el museo de Stuttgart... donde pasó inadvertido hasta 1824, cuando lo vio Georg Friedrich Jäger...
... Al estudiar estos huesos cayó en la cuenta de que eran similares a los hallados en Ingleterra y que se conocían como los “enigmas de Lyme Regis”.

Un tal Richard Anning puso un buen día una tienda de recuerdos para los turistas en el balneario de Lyme Regis.
Entre estos recuerdos estaban las consabidas conchas, estrellas de mar desecadas, etc.
Anning se dedicaba a coger estos objetos dispersos por las playas, para venderlas después. A esta tarea le ayudaba su hija Mary, que por aquel entonces contaba 12 años de edad.
Tanto el padre como la hija, pronto se dieron cuenta, que las conchas petrificadas eran más valoradas y mejor pagadas.
La pequeña Mary, movida posiblemente por el afán mercantil empezó a desenterrar conchas de moluscos fósiles de las capas jurásicas de las costas.
Un día... en 1811, Mary dio con el esqueleto de un ictiosaurio...
... que fue comprado por sir Everard Home, médico de la familia real inglesa y catedrático de anatomía y cirugía de la Universidad de Londres.
Durante algún tiempo, pensó si estos restos pertenecieron a un pez, anfibio o reptil...
... al final se inclinó por la posibilidad de que fuese un anfibio, pues... tenía cierto parecido con Proteus anguinus, salamandra ciega que hacía poco había sido descubierta....
Por ello, Sir Everard le dio el nombre de Proteosaurus.

Georg König y William Daniel Conybeare, llegaron a la conclusión que se trataba de un animal mitad pez, mitad reptil y le dieron el nombre de ictiosaurio común.
Cuvier dijo a propósito del Ictiosaurio: “una criatura con hocico de delfín, dientes de cocodrilo, cráneo y tórax de lagarto, aletas de ballena, y vértebras de pez”. Llegó a la conclusión que se trataba de un reptil.
Mary, mientras tanto, había desenterrado varios Ictiosaurios más y llegó a hacerse una expertísima comerciante de fósiles...
... y entre los años 1821-23... descubrió los primeros plesiosaurios (saurios marinos de cuello muy largo... y a los que más tarde se quiso relacionar con la serpiente de mar, o “monstruo del Lago Ness”).
También Cuvier interpretó adecuadamente a los plesiosaurios...
...Tenían una cabeza pequeña, con el cuello de serpiente y sus enormes aletas a modo de remos.
